The Dam on the Kickapoo River Gays Mills, Wisconsin

The Kickapoos (Kickapoo: Kiikaapoa or Kiikaapoi) are one of the Algonquian speaking Native American tribes. According to the Anishinaabeg, the name “Kickapoo” means “Stands Here and there” and refers to the tribes migratory patterns. The name can also mean “wanderer”.

The river is one of the oldest in the world since it “wanders” through the Driftless Area of Wisconsin. Retreating glaciers leave behind silt, clay, sand, gravel, and boulders — called drift. The river and the land on which I walk said to be of “Pre-Illinoian age” about 500,000 years old.

So with the age, the river, the dam, the water and a little Handel thrown in…it makes for a playful jump into the pastly present on a hot summer day.
